Sharing Content
iTunes U and YouTube EDU offer the University of Iowa community two options for distributing audio, video, and other content to audiences around the world.
These initiatives support the University’s education, research, and service missions through the public sharing of institutional media content. UI colleges, departments, and programs can submit content for distribution via iTunes U and YouTube EDU.
All content is subject to review before posting. The UI Center for Media Production, Information Technology Services, and the Office of University Relations share responsibility for administering iTunes U and YouTube EDU. Staff from these offices evaluate content and advise potential users with help from a campus-wide advisory committee.
Should I share my content?
If you’re interested in sharing your content via iTunes U or YouTube EDU, consider these questions:
- How does your content reflect or support the University’s education, research, and service missions?
- Since anyone can access iTunes U and YouTube EDU material, do you want your content to be available to anybody, anywhere?
- Does your content comply with the iTunes or YouTube terms or service? (For example, does your content use copyrighted music or other material that requires permissions?)
- Is your content of interest to a general audience or of value to particular group, like students in a given class? (Both may be good uses for iTunes U and YouTube EDU.)
Other publishing options
iTunes U and YouTube EDU aren’t the only options for sharing multimedia. Depending on your goals and the nature of your content, you might also consider:
- Standard YouTube channels: Offering the same reach as YouTube EDU, standard channels let UI colleges, departments, programs, and individuals post their own content in a single location. Learn more at www.youtube.com.
- Iowa Courses Online (ICON): Providing web-based access to authenticated users, ICON is ideal for posting course content in a controlled way, including copyrighted material governed by fair use standards. Learn more at https://icon.uiowa.edu.
- iFolio: Another web-based option for sharing course material, including work created by students. Learn more here.
- ITS digital media hosting and delivery: Storage for streaming media, media collections, and podcasts delivered via UI web sites and other channels. Learn more here.
- Iowa Digital Library: Maintained by University Libraries, the Iowa Digital Library includes UI-owned holdings with educational and archival value. Learn more at digital.lib.uiowa.edu.
- Iowa Research Online: The University’s repository for scholarly and creative work by faculty, investigators, and students. Learn more at ir.uiowa.edu.
